Privacy at Recall Ladder
Without an account
You can study without signing in. Your progress (topic levels, review schedule, test results, XP, streaks and achievements) is stored in your browser's local storage on this device and isn't sent to us. The browser also remembers a few display choices: your audio voice and speed, which “What's new” items you've seen, and notices you've dismissed. If you sign in later, the progress in this browser is copied to your account.
With an account
- Your account. Your email address, used to send you sign-in links and the emails you choose on the email preferences page.
- Your learning. Your progress on each topic, whether each answer was right, your review schedule, test results, XP, streaks and achievements, your time zone (for streaks), your appearance choice (Light, Dark or Match my device), the sets you save, and your email preferences. When you type an answer, we keep the result, not the text you typed.
- Flashcards and written practice. Which topic, the method, how the answer was entered (typed or spoken), how it was checked (exact rules, automatic checking, or by you) and the result. We don't keep what you write in practice, unless you send it to us in a grading report.
- Grading reports. If you report that a written answer was graded wrongly, we keep the answer you wrote, the result shown, how you entered it and your note, so we can fix the answer key.
- Speaking practice (language sets). Your recording plays back in your browser only and is never uploaded. If you're signed in, we save only the self-rating you choose (1–3). The microphone is used only after you press Record and your browser asks for permission.
- Study sets you create (Creator). The sets you build: titles, sections, lessons, questions and answers, grading criteria, sources, the pictures you upload and their descriptions, version history, and records of AI generation requests (what you asked for, its status, credits and cost, and the generated draft until you use or dismiss it).
- Pictures. When you upload a picture we convert it to a new image file and remove its hidden information, including camera details and location. Pictures are stored privately and shown only through Recall Ladder to people allowed to see the set: you, the people you share it with, and, if the set is listed in the Community Library, its learners.
- Sharing by email. When you share a set, we store each recipient's email address and your message, to send the invitation and manage access: when you invited them, whether they joined, and when you stopped sharing. Recipients see your email address and your message, and their replies go to you. We send them only the invitation you asked for and don't add them to any mailing list. If someone shares a set with you, we keep that you accepted, so you can study it; the person who shared it can see whether you joined, but not your progress.
- Community Library. If a set you created is listed, anyone can see its title, description and library details and your creator profile (display name, handle and bio), and signed-in learners can study it. Your email address, your other sets, your drafts and who studies your set are never shown. Once the library is open to everyone, search engines may show listed sets and creator profiles. You see how many learners saved or started your set, never who; if you also shared it with a few people, a small number could hint that one of them started it. We keep a record of each time you confirmed your rights when submitting, and of our review decisions. If you save a Community set, we keep the save until you remove it or delete your account, even if the set stops being listed.
- Reports. If you report a set (one shared with you or one in the Community Library), or an invitation, we keep the category you chose, what you wrote, which set or invitation it was about and your account (or, if you weren't signed in, the invitation), so a person can review it and we can tell you the outcome. The person who shared the set isn't told who reported it. If we restrict a set, end invitations or pause sharing or set creation on an account (including automatically, pending review, after several upheld reports), we keep a record of what we did, when and why, and we tell the people affected by email.
A copy of your progress also stays in your browser so the site works offline; it syncs when you're back online.
Voice answers
Written practice has an optional Speak button. It uses your browser's own speech recognition, which is run by the browser's maker: Google for Chrome, Microsoft for Edge, Apple for Safari. Your browser may send your voice to that company's speech service to turn it into text, under its own privacy terms.
Recall Ladder never receives or stores your audio. Only the text you check and choose to submit is graded, like a typed answer. The microphone is used only after you tap Speak and your browser asks for permission, and it stops when you tap Done or Cancel or leave the page.
Checking written answers
Written answers are first checked with exact rules, in your browser or on our servers. Some answers need someone to judge their meaning.
Automatic answer checking is currently on. When the exact rules can't decide, the question, its model answer and your written answer (not your audio, name or email) are sent to Anthropic, which runs the Claude model that judges the meaning. Anthropic processes this data as our service provider. We keep a record of each check (when, the result and its cost), not your answer.
Contact form
If you write to us through the contact form, we receive the topic you choose, your email address, your name and the page or set if you give them, and your message. It's sent to our support inbox by email and also kept in our database, where only we can see it, so no request is missed. We use it only to answer you. The copy in our database is deleted automatically 12 months after you send it; we keep the email conversation in our support inbox for as long as we need it to help you. You can ask us to delete either one sooner.
Payments
If you subscribe to a paid plan, Stripe handles checkout and billing on its own pages. We send Stripe your email address and an internal account number. Card details go straight to Stripe and never reach Recall Ladder. We keep your plan, its status and Stripe's customer reference.
Cookies and browser storage
There are no advertising or analytics trackers and no cross-site tracking. We use only what the site needs to work:
- Sign-in cookies, set only when you sign in, which keep you signed in.
rl_returning, which notes that this browser has progress so Today loads first. It holds no progress data and lasts up to one year.rl_theme, which remembers your appearance choice (Light, Dark or Match my device) in this browser so pages open in it straight away. When you're signed in it also holds a short one-way code made from your account, used only to tell whether the choice saved to your account has been applied in this browser. It lasts up to one year.- Local storage, for the progress and display choices described above.
To see whether Recall Ladder is used, our server adds one to a daily total each time someone opens the home page, the library, a study set, the Plans page or a Community page, or runs a Community search (for example “searches on 26 October: 14”). If you aren't signed in, it also adds one the first time your browser answers a question and the first time it learns a topic; your browser keeps a small note so each is counted only once. Nothing about you is recorded with these totals: no account, cookie, IP address, browser details or search words.
Who processes data for us
- Supabase: our database, sign-in and storage for pictures in study sets you create. Hosted in the US, in AWS us-east-1 (North Virginia).
- Vercel: hosts the app. Its servers run in Washington, D.C., USA.
- Stripe: payments, if you subscribe.
- Amazon Web Services (Amazon SES): sends our emails, including sign-in links, the weekly “what's new” email and contact-form messages to our support inbox.
- Anthropic: automatic checking of written answers, only while it's on (it is now), and, if you use AI generation while creating a set, writing draft study content from the subject and instructions you enter. Anthropic processes this as our service provider, keeps it for a limited period (currently up to 30 days) and doesn't use it to train its models.
- Zoho Mail: hosts our support inbox (support@somexai.com), where emails and contact-form messages to us arrive.
Fonts are served from our own servers. Lesson audio is recorded in advance from our own text and served from our own servers, so none of your data goes to the audio provider.
Emails
We send sign-in links when you ask for them, and a weekly “what's new” email about new and updated study sets, only when there's something new. That email is on by default; every one has a one-click unsubscribe link, and you can turn it off on the email preferences page. When you share a set, we send one invitation email to each address you enter, on your behalf; it isn't a marketing email and doesn't sign anyone up for anything.
How long we keep it, and deleting it
We keep your account data until you delete your account. You can delete it yourself on the account page: your progress, reviews, test results, learning history, practice history, grading reports, achievements, saved sets and email preferences are deleted at once, and your sign-in is removed. If you subscribe, your subscription is cancelled and your billing profile is deleted at Stripe; Stripe keeps past invoices and payment records as the law requires. We keep a one-way code (not your email) recording that the deletion was completed, so it can't run twice. Records of automatic answer checks are kept without your account once it's deleted. Encrypted backups expire after up to 7 days.
Study sets you create, their pictures and generation records are kept until you delete them or your account. Deleting a set deletes its draft, its published copy, everyone's progress on it and its pictures at once; unpublishing it instead hides it from everyone and keeps that progress. Withdrawing a set from the Community Library makes it private again; learners keep their progress, which returns if it's listed again. Deleting the set or your account also deletes its listing and, with your account, your creator profile. Deleting your account deletes all of them. Backups are kept for up to 7 days.
Invitations you send are kept until you delete the set or your account (stopping sharing keeps a record that you stopped). Unpublishing a set ends its invitations (we keep a record that they ended); deleting a set removes them. If a set shared with you is unpublished, your progress on it is kept until its creator deletes the set or you delete your account, and it comes back if the set is shared with you again. If you delete your account, invitations you sent are deleted, and any set shared with you is no longer linked to you. If you received an invitation and want your address removed, contact us.
Reports and our records of moderation decisions are kept for up to 3 years after the report is resolved, because they may be needed to handle copyright complaints and repeat abuse. If you delete your account, your reports are kept without your account; if you delete a set that has been reported, the report stays open, with the set's title, until a person has reviewed it; if you delete your account, reports about your sets are closed.
Our providers keep their own operational logs for a limited time: Vercel keeps request logs (such as the pages requested and the browser used) for up to 1 day, and Supabase keeps database and API logs for up to 7 days.
You can also reset any study set, and clear your browser's storage at any time.
Children
Recall Ladder is for people aged 13 and over, as our terms say. We don't knowingly collect personal information from children under 13. If you believe a child under 13 has given us personal information, contact us and we'll delete it.
