Building sets

Accessibility

Writing sets that work for learners who use screen readers, keyboards, zoom or dark mode.

What Recall Ladder does for you

Sets you publish use the same learner pages as the library: they work with a keyboard and screen readers, follow the learner's light or dark theme, and reflow on phones and when zoomed. Diagrams made with the diagram editor are drawn by Recall Ladder from your labels, so their text stays readable in both themes. Learners can answer written questions by typing or by voice.

Writing clearly

  • Keep lesson paragraphs short and use plain words; explain a term the first time you use it.
  • Ask one thing per question, and make wrong answers plausible but clearly wrong. Validation points out common problems such as a wrong answer that matches the right one.
  • Don't rely on color or position alone (“the red one”, “on the left”): say what you mean.
  • Add the accepted alternatives for written answers (abbreviations, other spellings), so learners aren't marked wrong for them.

Pictures and diagrams

Write alt text for every picture and illustration (how). Put any text a learner needs in the lesson as well as in a picture, and prefer a diagram from the diagram editor over a picture of a diagram.
